In LTL there may two or three modes of transport, so FTL is generally preferred, but for smaller shipments, LTL is more cost adjustable.

Air Freight is generally used for faster shipments while Ocean and Road freight movements are slowly taking more time, so they are systematically arranged planned as per the requirements of the goods. While Intermodal is mostly used these days as they allow ease of movement from land to Sea or rail to road with their Storage done in containers which are the almost same size for all transporting vehicles respectively.
